DAKAR, Jan 24 (Reuters) - A Twitter post on Monday from the account of Burkina Faso's President Roch Kabore, whose whereabouts are unknown amid an unfolding crisis described by regional bloc ECOWAS as an attempted military coup, called on those who have taken up arms to lay them down.

"Our nation is going through difficult moments. We must at this precise moment safeguard our democratic norms. I invite those who have taken up arms to lay them down in the higher interest of the nation," said the post, which was signed RK.

Kabore has not appeared in public since heavy gunfire erupted at military camps on Sunday. (Reporting by Bate Felix; Writing by Estelle Shirbon; Editing by Catherine Evans)
