Terre des hommes (Tdh) has chosen the Cité du Savoir as the location for its new pilot delegation in Central America. This humanitarian hub plays host to the almost 120 international organisations and NGOs providing urgent aid and development cooperation who have set up their regional offices for Latin America there. It is worth noting the presence of the following organisations: the ICRC, the International Federation of the Red Cross, Save the Children, Plan, Médécins sans frontières, World Vision, CARE, as well as IOM, ILO, OAS, the entire UN system, UNOPS, UNICEF, UNODC, OCHA, UNHCR, WFP, UNDP, UNRISD, and including state cooperation agencies such as AECID (Spain).
Strengthen Tdh intervention in Latin America
It is a big advantage for Tdh to have its partners and funders in one place and close to each other so that the foundation may strengthen strategic alliances and financing options regarding all Tdh interventions in Latin America and the Caribbean. For example, it is worth remembering that the 2010 Haiti emergency was coordinated from this humanitarian hub by the most important organisations mentioned previously, brought together under the regional network REDLAC:Regional Risk, Emergency and Disaster Task Force in Latin America.
Juvenile Justice and prevention of violence
On 15th and 16th September last year, the new Tdh project Regional Project for Juvenile Justice and Prevention of Violence in Central America was drawn up at the Cité du Savoir with the help of Peruvian and Nicaraguan delegates, the new Tdh Head of Latin America Region, the Tdh Regional Advisor on Juvenile Justice and two important international partners: COMJIB (Conference of Ministers of Justice of Ibero-American Countries) and Creative/USAID.
This new project - which is regional in character - was drawn up whilst taking into consideration the major demands and needs expressed by the authorities of the countries in the region. The main aspects of this regional project will be presented to the five countries of the region over the following months.
Finally, it is worth noting that this project provides a new vision and scope to the role of Tdh which strengthens the foundation’s position as principal support and advisory organisation in reinforcing public and private institutions dealing with children who are in conflict with the law.
