The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, has reaffirmed the strong European commitment to the global effort against Ebola and has announced additional €30 million of funding to help deal with the deadly virus in West Africa.
The announcement was made today in New York in a High Level Meeting on the response to the Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon. The additional aid will further support the treatment of victims, strengthen healthcare systems and provide additional logistic capacity.
The Ebola outbreak is affecting the West Africa region: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea. It is the worst outbreak ever of the epidemic. As of to 24 September, more than 6 263 cases of the disease have been reported, including 2 917 deaths.
The European Commission has been scaling up its response to the epidemic since March 2014 and has pledged a total of €180 million in aid.
