The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to enable UN life-saving assistance across four Syria border crossing points, without needing the consent of the Government of Syria. The resolution will enable access to 3 million people in hard-to-reach areas, marking a step forward in the international community's efforts to alleviate suffering of Syrians caught in the conflict.
European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva welcomed the adoption of UN Resolution 2165.
In her statement she said that the ability of UN agencies to cross border more easily "will speed up assistance to nearly three million people, among them children, women and the elderly, who have not received regular relief aid for many months". She drew particular attention to the plight of the 200 000 people trapped inside Eastern Aleppo City in urgent need of assistance who will benefit from this development.
