Guinea, specialized care for children with serious illnesses
Terre des hommes (Tdh), with support from Portugalete (a town in the Basque region of Spain), recently donated medical equipment to the Ignace Deen Hospital located in Conakry, capital of Guinea. It was a priceless gift in such a poor country with an inadequate health system. Children with serious illnesses such as heart problems can now be quickly and effectively cared for directly on site.
An anesthesia machine, an oxygen concentrator, an electrocardiogram and other medical equipment have been provided to the departments for cardiology and pediatric surgery. This essential equipment will be used to treat children suffering from heart ailments or the disastrous consequences of ingesting products containing caustic soda. Mohamed Awada, director of the Ignace Deen Hospital, is committed to properly using and maintaining this valuable material — a condition set by Tdh.
This collaboration to build up local capabilities in the field of specialized care represents a significant advance in healthcare. Furthermore, this local initiative complements a program of transferring children to Europe for treatment when required by their state of health.
