AID workers for Plan International are on stand-by should families need help to recover from superstorm Usagi.
The typhoon battered the southern coast of China on Sunday (Sept 22) evening with winds of up to 100mph.
More heavy rain is forecast after Usagi made landfall in Shanwei city, leaving 25 confirmed dead and causing severe disruption to transport networks.
“We’re continuing to monitor the situation and have staff on standby for a rapid assessment if the situation deteriorates further,” says Plan’s country director in China, Sven Coppens.
The huge storm also brought heavy rainfall to Northern Philippines, leaving two people dead.
“Ensuing floods submerged parts of Manila and parts of neighbouring provinces,” says Plan’s country director in the Philippines, Carin van der Hor.
“The city was placed under a state of calamity after a number of villages experienced the worst floods in the city’s history.”
